- Psalm 5:9 “My enemies cannot speak a truthful word. Their deepest desire is to destroy others. Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with flattery.” — Are you destroying others with your words?
- Psalm 34:13 “Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies!” — Obey God in the way you speak and communicate with others.
- Psalm 39:1 “I said to myself, ‘I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.'” — take your complaints and concerns to God.. He can take it.
- Proverbs 13:3 “Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.” — You have not yet mastered self-control if you cannot control what you say. Words cut and destroy. Stop and think before you speak.
Food for thought:
Words are important. Words can lift you up out of a pit, make you feel appreciated, loved, and secure. However, words can also knock you flat on your face and make you feel worthless, embarrassed, and rejected.
Many times we harbor the same fiery darts of toxic, poisonous words that others have shot at us. The Bible says what you say flows from what is in your heart (Luke 6:45) [insert heart check here]. So, somewhere inside of us we harbor the venom that brought the hurtful words to the surface.
How to watch your tongue you might ask?
- Examine your heart.
- Pray for God’s guidance and wisdom to watch your mouth.
- Write Scripture on your mirror, your hand, at work, wherever you need to.
- Hang with good friends who don’t belittle and gossip about others. The Word says bad company corrupts good morals (1 Cor 15:33). You are who you hang around. You hang with yappy women you will yap. [insert friend check here].
- Fill the urge to lash out and go off? WALK AWAY. Better yet return to that person with a compliment, spread love not venom.
- Get alone and look up every verse in your Bible about the tongue and study and I mean really study and dissect what each verse is talking about. And then do it again. I totally had to do this, God is serious so let’s take it serious as well shall we?
- Put other’s before yourself and remember everyone is fighting a battle… speak accordingly.
Proverbs 15:4 “Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”
Proverbs 21:23 “Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.”
Proverbs 21:9 “It’s better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a quarrelsome wife in a lovely home.”
Proverbs 27:15-16 “.. a quarrelsome wife is as annoying as a constant dripping on a rainy day. Stopping her complaints is like trying to stop the wind or trying to hold something with greased hands.”
talk is cheap. God wants our conduct to back up our
beliefs. the proof is in the pudding. stop tearing others
down and start loving them up. Christ in us the hope of glory.
act and speak accordingly.
