got (super) milk?
I recently came across a medical journal that discussed how mom’s milk changes to help baby more than just for caloric intake and bonding. Basically, the article talks about how baby’s saliva sneaks back into mom’s nipple and the mammary gland receptors scan the baby’s backwash for different viruses and bacteria. If a virus or bacteria is detected, mom’s milk composition will change causing an increase in leukocyte production. Leukocytes are “infection busting cells” that can protect against disease causing viruses and bacteria and are predominately high in colostrum. Colostrum is the early form of milk that moms produce in the first few days after birth. Colostrum is sometimes referred to as “liquid gold” for obvious reasons. It contains a host of benefits including: increased levels of carbs, proteins, and antibodies.
After noticing Theo sounding a little congested, I pumped the milk in the middle. Notice how it resembles colostrum, the high in antibody and leukocyte milk that one produces during the first few days post baby, compared to the two on either side. I can’t help but believe the truth behind this “baby backwash” article. It also shows how amazing our God is! He created us to be able to not only be a life-line for our babies by providing them with the nourishment they need, but also being able to produce super immune boosting antibodies that help them fight off sickness.
I am extremely thankful that I am able to breastfeed my son. However, if you can’t or you choose not to breastfeed, I am not saying you are wrong or you are a bad mother. At the end of the day if your child is fed and loved you are doing a fantastic job! I am discovering that there is no one “right” way to do this whole child raising thing, there are many ways and that’s what makes it so beautiful!
“Oh yes, You shaped me first inside, then out; You formed me in my mother’s womb. I thank You, High God – You’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration – what a creation!.”
